How this works — including the part most sites skip
Blue Hen Pros is a matching service. We are not a contractor, we don’t perform construction work, and we hold no home improvement license — because we don’t need one to do what we do. Here’s the whole process, plus the business model, so you can decide whether to trust us with your project.
-
You tell us the project
One form: what’s wrong, what town, how to reach you. Takes about a minute. The more you tell us, the better we can match — “ceiling stain after the storm, 1990s colonial” is far more useful than “roof.”
-
We match you with one pro
A single contractor from our network who is licensed, insured, and genuinely working in your zip code. If nobody fits the job, we say so rather than sending you someone who’ll waste your afternoon.
-
Your quote, your call
They contact you, come see the job, and quote it. Move forward if it’s right — or don’t, or get other bids to compare against. Your contract is with the contractor, never with us, and you’re never exclusive to us.
What we are, and what we’re not
We are
- A free matching service for homeowners
- Paid a referral fee by contractors, never by you
- Focused only on New Castle County, Delaware
- Checking license and insurance before any match
We are not
- A licensed home improvement contractor
- The party that performs, warranties, or insures your work
- A guarantor of any contractor’s workmanship
- A price-comparison service — if you want competing bids, get them; we never demand exclusivity
How to protect yourself — from anyone, including us
Whoever you end up hiring, do these five things. They cost you nothing and they prevent almost every horror story:
- Verify the contractor’s Delaware license yourself — don’t take our word or theirs.
- Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly from their insurer.
- Get the full scope in writing before any money changes hands.
- Never pay the full amount up front. A deposit is normal; paying in full is not.
- Walk away from anyone pressuring you to sign today.
The questions we’d ask if we were you
So how do you actually make money?
Contractors in our network pay us a referral fee for qualified projects we send them. That’s it. We don’t sell your data to anyone else, we don’t take a cut of your project, and we don’t charge you a cent. It’s worth knowing this because it tells you what our incentive is: we get paid when you get matched, which means we’re motivated to match you well enough that you actually hire someone.
Does the referral fee get passed on to me in the price?
Honest answer: we can’t promise it never does — we don’t set contractor pricing and can’t audit their bids. Your protection is that you’re never obligated and never exclusive to us: if the number feels high, get an independent bid and compare. We encourage exactly that, and a contractor who knows their customers comparison-shop prices accordingly.
What does "vetted" mean, specifically?
It means a set of rules we apply before anyone gets your details: an active Delaware business license, a current certificate of liability insurance, and confirmation that they genuinely service your town. A contractor who can’t produce those doesn’t receive leads, and one that homeowners complain about stops receiving them. What "vetted" does NOT mean is a guarantee of workmanship — a license proves someone is permitted to do the work, not that they will do it well, and we can’t stand behind work we don’t perform. So read the contract, check their reviews independently, and ask for local references. Our full policy is on the vetting page.
Will you sell my information?
No. Your details go to the matched contractors and nowhere else. We don’t sell lead lists to third parties, and we don’t resell your project six months later when you’ve forgotten about us.
What if I don’t like any of the quotes?
Then don’t hire anyone. That’s a completely normal outcome and there’s no penalty, no follow-up pressure, and no fee. Plenty of people use us to sanity-check a bid they already have.
What if I want to compare several bids?
Do it — comparing is smart, and we’ll never ask you to be exclusive to us. What we won’t do is run the bidding war for you by blasting your number to a list of companies; that’s the exact thing homeowners hate about lead sites. Get your other bids from anyone you like, and treat our match as one of them. If our pro can’t win a fair comparison, we matched you badly and we’d want to know.
Ready to get matched with the right pro?
Tell us about your project once. We’ll match you with one vetted, licensed contractor serving your town — no bidding war, no obligation to hire anyone.
